The Ghost

The Ghost

As I laid on my bed, relaxing before it was time to turn in for the night, my 23 year old daughter sat on the cedar chest at the foot of my bed, visiting with me.

It had been raining most of the day and we could hear that it was coming down pretty steady at the time.

Somehow our conversation got around to spirits, ghosts and demons. My husband likes to watch ghost hunter shows and mostly I just make fun of him. We reminisced about the time the guy in one of those shows claimed to have found claw marks on his stomach after getting out of the shower.  We had laughed that the dummy must have forgotten all about that itch he had scratched in the middle of his shower.  But this particular night my daughter and I were discussing whether or not we believed such otherworldly creatures could be real.

We both agreed that there must be some kind of foundation that leads so many people to believe in them.  However, I told her I didn’t think such things could affect people unless they allowed them to. She speculated that there may be places where encounters were more likely, such as an old abandoned prison.

As we talked in the dimly lit room, while the rain pattered steady and loud outside, I began to think maybe we better change the subject.  One or both of us was likely to have a hard time falling asleep, or maybe we’d have a nightmare. My daughter must have been thinking the same thing cause that line of conversation kind of came to a close right about then.

As we sat there in the brief lull of only a few seconds, from right outside the bedroom window we heard an eerie sound, “Ooo, Ooo, Ooooo!”

Startled, both of us stared at each other with wide eyes, wondering for just a moment what on earth that terribly spooky sound was!

As we realized what it was, we both burst into hysterical laughter as the rain outside the window fell and the wind wooshed back and forth.

But the very strange thing was, that was the one and only time that evening that the wind made that very distinct sound.

Or was it the wind…???

Or maybe an owl?? We get owls in our very suburban neighborhood because there’s a couple of ponds nearby. Either way I can only imagine the goosebumps you must have had!

Emily, I don’t think we have many owls near where I live, but maybe. You just never know! It was a funny (and just a little scary) experience!

LOL! What I took from your story is what I feel happens to me all the time… Once I open my mouth and talk about something like I don’t believe it or agree with it, something happens that tests all my theories! 😀 nice post

Or was it just the wind!!! Seems like the universe knows just when to make eerie sounds at the right moment when spooky things are being discussed. Great read, love to see these stories leading up to Halloween.
