Roasting Sunflower Seeds

This year G2 and I grew a giant sunflower.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had to convince him that it was okay for boys to grow flowers; the giant part helped!  I also told him that his great grandpa was a gardener and grew all kinds of flowers!  So grow one we did and it was a success.  We only grew one and we started it in a little pot in the house in the early Spring.  It got…

Revealing the Harvest – 2015!

This is my very first annual post to reveal the harvest for the year from my garden!  I have visions of grandeur that next year I will cover the garden with a weed barrier, cover that with decorative mulch, build some raised beds, fill them with clean (weed free!) dirt, religiously water and fertilize it and grow a spectacular garden that will yield an incredible, amazing, bountiful harvest.  Stay tuned for my second annual “Revealing the Harvest” post in the…

How and When to Re-pot Your House Plants

A few weeks ago my sister and I were joking about how she was so organized and on top of things that she had spent the afternoon re-potting her house plants.  She is retired and I am earning my living by being blogger and a crafter, a childcare provider for five toddlers, a home school teacher for a preschooler and a 9th grader, and an office manager for our family window cleaning business! All those jobs leave leave very little…

An Unlikely Harvest

An Unlikely Harvest

Last Spring, with my garden soil freshly tilled and warming in the sunshine, I happily went to the local nursery and purchased some young vegetable sprouts, a pumpkin plant for my grandchildren and cantaloupe and cucumber for my husband. As a child spending countless hours by my daddy’s side in his beautiful yard full of fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, roses and various other flowers and interesting plants, I developed a love for gardening.  But while my dad earned a Master…

Gardening With My Grandkids

My favorite place to spend time as a little girl was in our beautiful yard with my daddy. Our yard was exquisite with fruit trees and ornamental shrubs, lush green grass and colorful flowers of all kinds. I would listen as he talked with our neighbors over the back fence,  watch and learn as he did his gardening and we would have conversations about all kinds of things. Our yard was a gathering place for our family whether it was…

Critters in the Garden

One day a few years ago, I found a water snake in my garden pond. It just happened to be about two weeks after my teenage son Mike lost his pet corn snake in our house. It was such a surprise!  At first I thought it was my son’s snake (we never did find that one) but upon closer examination I realized it wasn’t.  I ran inside all excited and rallied my husband and sons outside to witness the surprise…
