When I was a teenager I took a cake decorating class with my sisters.  It must have appealed to me the more than it did them, because after that, for several years, I became the official family birthday cake maker.  I think maybe my inspiration to decorate cakes probably came from a cake my sisters made me for one of my birthdays.  From about the time I was 11 or 12 years old until I was in my early 20’s I was obsessed with the basketball team at Weber State University! My sisters made me a cut-up cake in the shape of a basketball player and I loved it!!

I had a lot of fun making cakes in those early years.  I remember a great big cake I made for my nephew’s 1st birthday.  It was of a baby holding a ball over his head.  Another cake I made for one of my  nieces consisted of a separate cake for each letter of her first name.   The more creative I could make them, the more I enjoyed it.    I even sold a couple of cakes as a teenager.   I remember making two different cakes with the face of 1970’s heartthrob Shaun Cassidy on them!  The second one was a lot better than the first and showed how my skills were improving.  I once made a doll cake and donated it to a fund raiser for my Junior High School.  I remember watching and being so happy as a little girl picked my cake and her parents bought it for her

Once I got married and had small children, cake decorating became a little overwhelming.  I retired from being the family birthday cake decorator.  A few years later I had a niece who took over for a time.  She’s incredibly talented and made some amazing cakes!  She had two young kids, then she married a man with three young kids and they had a baby together.  You guessed it, she retired from her post as family birthday cake decorator too!!  Now for family birthday parties we usually buy cupcakes from the bakery, or sometimes we switch things up and buy doughnuts or some other sweet treat!

My love for cake decorating has stuck with me though.  I have a little business on the side with one of my daughters that we call “Sweet Dreams Bakery.”  There’s a fun little story about how I came up with that name.  When I was a little girl and said goodnight to my parents, my dad would always say, “Sweet Dreams!”  So I chose that name for my little cake decorating business.

We sell cakes and other sweet treats from time to time.  We’ve made cookies, and gourmet cupcakes (my favorite) and gourmet crispy rice treats!

For each of my three married children I’ve made a wedding cake.  Our last child is getting married on April 14th of this year, so I have one more to go.

While I still find cake decorating a little overwhelming (there’s so much pressure for it to turn out just right!) I do enjoy making a beautiful cakes.  The best part is when it is all done and the stressing is over and I can just enjoy how well it turned out!  You can visit the Facebook page for Sweet Dreams Bakery – at this LINK!
