Refurbished Welcome Mat

Repainted Welcome Mat

A few years ago I had the deck of my home rebuilt.  The old one was ancient and rickety and had to be replaced!  The new deck turned out beautifully and so of course, I just had to buy new chairs and planters and things to decorate it.   One of my favorite deck decorations was a welcome mat that had the word “home” on it.  It was painted with kind of a rustic look and I thought it was…

When Should Babies Begin to Feed Themselves?

Most babies can begin learning to feed themselves by around 9 months old.  Their fine motor skills are developing and at this age they can begin to pick up small pieces of soft food between their forefinger and thumb.  They may start by using all of their fingers and grabbing a handful of food.  They often miss what they’re trying to pick up or drop it halfway to their mouths.  Don’t let that frustrate you.  As long as baby isn’t…

Don’t Force Children to Eat!

As a childcare provider for nearly a quarter of a century I’ve seen many parents who believe it’s a good idea to force their children to eat when they don’t want to.  One little boy’s mom gave him a big cup of milk every morning and made him drink it.  He didn’t like milk at all and I know that for a fact because I cleaned it up more than once when, after forcing it down, he spewed it back…

I think the 4th of July has to be my all time favorite holiday.  Simplicity is the reason.  There is no gift buying or wrapping, no decorating, and no baking.  The city does all the planning and decorating and all I have to do is show up for the party.  It’s so festive and fun and relaxing! The city of Layton, Utah does a fantastic job of putting on Liberty Days Celebration.  The day starts with breakfast in the park,…

The Fire that Wouldn’t Go Out!

So many people are enjoying camping and summertime barbecues and fire pits and such right now that I decided it’s  a good time to remind everyone how important it is to completely extinguish your fires before leaving them unattended! We’ve had a little private school for years and we end each school year with a field day of fun and games and food!  One year after all of the competition was over, we barbecued hot dogs using “just light the bag”…
