How and When to Re-pot Your House Plants

October 22, 2015|Posted in: Welcome to My Garden!

Re-Potting House PlantsA few weeks ago my sister and I were joking about how she was so organized and on top of things that she had spent the afternoon re-potting her house plants.  She is retired and I am earning my living by being blogger and a crafter, a childcare provider for five toddlers, a home school teacher for a preschooler and a 9th grader, and an office manager for our family window cleaning business! All those jobs leave leave very little tome for anything else.  I told my sister that re-potting my houseplants was something I could only dream about.  But then I got to thinking . . . that would make a great blog post!  So, WA-LA, just like that, re-potting my house plants suddenly became part of earning a living and the other day I was finally able to get it done!

How do you know when it’s time to re-pot?  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have they have outgrown their pots?
  • Do they have exposed roots?
  • Do they  have a lot of dry, yellow or brown leaves.
  • Are they growing lopsided or crooked?
  • Are they to failing to thrive and grow?
  • Would you like to split them into two or more pots so you have more plants?  (They make great housewarming gifts!)

If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes!” then it is time to do some re-potting!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Extra pots of various sizes.  I purchased two larger pots and then I was able to use the vacated pots for re-potting all of the rest of my plants.
  • A bag of nutrient rich potting soil.  (I used some (not so nutrient rich) soil and some soil from my compost bin.
  • A small hand spade.
  • Gardener’s clippers.
  • Watering can and water.

These pictures show the process I used.

  1.  This plant had outgrown its pot and had exposed roots and it was growing a little crookedly.  I planted it in a bigger pot and made sure all of the roots were well covered.  I also made sure it was nice and straight in it’s new pot.

2.  This plant had outgrown its pot and had a lot of yellow leaves.  I trimmed all of its yellow leaves off and re-potted it in the pot vacated by the Rubber Tree Plant.

3.  These plants are called, “Mother-In-Law’s Tongue” and they were separated into three plants from the original one.

4.  Both of these plants were growing lopsidedly in their pots.  I transplanted them into larger pots, positioned them more straightly in the pots and patted the soil down firmly to hold th.em securely

5.  These are starts from the top of a pineapple (I understand they can actually bear fruit in a couple of years).  I transplanted them from the jars of water where they grew roots (after cleaning off all of the old leaves) into pots with soil.

These photos show the finished products.  They look much better now and I’m so happy I got the job done!

Definite motivation. I have several buckets full of aloe vera that need to be split and planted. And thanks for the tip on growing pineapple, might have to try and see if I have success, or how quickly I kill it!

I really need to take some time and go through this. I kill all of my plants. My husband has kept ours alive.
