Back to School Shopping – In the Good Ol’ Days!

When I was a little girl school shopping was a grand adventure!  My oldest sister graduated from high school the year after I was born. But my next two sisters were 5 and 6 years older than me and so they were interested in finding just the right fashion to impress their friends.  That “grown-up” girl attitude made things especially exciting for their adoring little sister!

I remember the three of us sisters going school shopping every year with our mom just before the school year got underway..  We shopped in downtown Ogden, Utah (about 20 minutes away) because our hometown of Layton didn’t have any clothing stores back then. Now the city is full of them and also has a mall.  But back then we not only had to go to the “city” to shop but we also had to go out onto the city street to get into each new store.

When I first started school, girls were required to wear dresses!  (Yes, that was a very long time ago and yes I’m getting old!). It was only a couple of years after I started though, before they began letting us girls wear pants. (So I’m not that terribly old yet!). But, our clothes were still more formal than the clothes we wore for play and shopping for new ones each year was a big event.

Groovy Outfit!

I remember in third grade (around 1969-70) I got an outfit that consisted of a green and purple plaid skirt, a green shirt and a brown faux suede vest with fringe that had beads on the ends!  I was in the height of fashion – and oh so proud!!

It was such fun to be shopping with my mom and sisters, picking out pretty outfits, making sure they matched, and giving each other opinions about which outfits were the best!  Of course we had to make sure we had enough socks and underwear and new shoes were a must as well!

School shopping is a treasured memory from my childhood and when I reflect back on it, I realize how very blessed and loved I was. After shopping we would always go to lunch in the Tiffan Room at the ZCMI store where we would order our favorite meals and enjoy them over conversations about all the exciting adventures the new school year was sure to hold in store!

No, you’re not old! WE’re about the same age, youngsters yet!
I loved this look back in time. We had to wear our pants under dresses when it was cold! Fortunately, I was in Fl, so it wasn’t cold much!

Haha this made me giggle! Back to school shopping sure has changed! I didn’t have to wear a dress, but when I was really small, my mom made me haha!

    I love online shopping.

BUT! I can definitely see how going shopping with your mom and buying all these new clothes and feeling exciting can be a beautiful memory. I have to make this a tradition when my kids get older. Thanks for sharing how it was in the olden days 😉

School shopping was a big.deal in our home. There were certain times a year we got new clothes. Now it seems like schools supplies and accessories are the stars now lol.

We missed out on all of this. We had uniforms to wear so slightly less exciting shopping to be done. But loved joining you on your trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing.
